20.
"Happy Birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday to Dex, happy birthday to you!" The group of business and economics majors all stood around one single table clapping and congratulating Dex Masterson, the last one to turn twenty out of all of Simone and Jane's friends. Jane leaned over and whispered in Dex's ear, and Dex smiled in response and kissed her on the cheek. Jane laughed, and motioned over to Simone to come over and get in the picture. Simone leaned into Jane, who was beaming at her boyfriend, Dex, and turned to Simone and whispered "thank you for setting us up, I owe you one," to which Simone replied with a hug. Random cameras were flashing at the trio, and Dex waved over Cameron, Simone's longtime crush. Simone's body tensed as he put his arm around her shoulder as he squeezed to get in the picture.
"Say 'One year till legal!'" someone yelled from behind a camera.
"One year till legal!" they all said, and the quickly disbanded from their intimate huddle.
"All right, everybody, let's begin the couples trivia challenge," Jane said with Dex's arm draped around her waist. "Everyone grab your significant other, and fill out the quiz that's being passed around. Whoever gets the most answers right, wins, um, something! You may begin!"
Everyone paired up with their boyfriends or girlfriends, and the only two left were Simone and Cameron.
"Hey, Cameron, go over and do it with Simone," Dex turned to Simone and smiled. Jane had told Dex how much Simone liked him, and now Dex said it was his duty to get them together.
"All right, sure," Cameron jogged over to where Simone was sitting. "Hey."
"Hey," Simone uttered. Cameron was wearing a crisp, white oxford underneath his blazer. Out of curiosity, Simone asked, "Where did you get your blazer from?"
"Oh, funny you should ask," Cameron looked down at his blazer and back up at Simone. "It was part of my uniform in high school. I'm too lazy to get a new one. Well, you know I'm lazy."
Oh yes, Simone did. Last year, he always forgot to bring supplies to class and mooches off of Simone, but she didn't mind. "I do. Can we start the quiz, I really want to win."
"Yeah, same here."
The two filled out the quiz in a short amount of time, and after turning it in to Jane and Dex, they began to talk. He told her about his life before college, and she told him what it was like to go to boarding school, just the good parts. He just sat there and listened closely, like there would be a quiz on what Simone was spewing out to him. After awhile, and it's was announced that the winner of challenged would be announced at midnight, Cameron instigated a new conversation.
"I don't want to make you uncomfortable, but Dex told me."
Simone instantly knew what he was talking about. Dex had told him about her past, probably every detail Jane knew about it. But so much time had passed, Simone didn't care.
"It doesn't, really. Thanks for telling me, I guess."
"Oh look, it's almost midnight! I hope we win!" Cameron turned towards where Dex and Jane were standing, holding the results in their hands.
"We are only saying who got first," Dex said. "Sorry if that hurts anyone's feelings." The crowd of undergrads laughed and Cameron grabbed Simone's hand.
"Squeeze my hand for good luck," he said.
"And the winner is," Dex paused, looked around the room.
"Simone and Cameron!" Jane yelled.
"Thanks everyone for playing this lame game, on my eventful 20th birthday. Everybody please leave. Now. I'm not joking."
Everyone laughed again, and Cameron leaned in for a hug. "Ah, this was fun. Reminds me of last year and all the late night studying. I've missed you, Simone."
Simone did not believe the words coming out of Cameron's mouth. "Yeah, likewise."
The two began to file out of the dingy italian restaurant where Dex and Jane were now cleaning up the remnants of a party. "Can I take you home?" Cameron asked.
"Yeah, that'd be great."
The drive back to campus was silent, and it wasn't until Cameron was helping Simone out of his car that the silence was broken.
Simone was now standing in front of her dorm, looking for her key card in her jacket pocket. That was when Cameron spoke "I, um, I, uh." Cameron didn't finish his sentence, because before he could he had pressed his lips against Simone's.
Simone felt a jolt of energy, a feeling she hadn't felt since she last kissed
Max. She quickly tried to push the thought out of her head, and then Cameron pulled away.
"I like you," he said.
"I like you, too."
